{"id":261,"date":"2020-04-21T11:16:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-21T11:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sebastianbaert.eliott-markus.digital\/followers-at-the-time-of-the-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2020-09-09T09:11:06","modified_gmt":"2020-09-09T09:11:06","slug":"followers-at-the-time-of-the-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sebastien-baert.eliott-markus.cloud\/en\/followers-at-the-time-of-the-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Followers at the time of the COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In his recent contribution, the Professor Manfred Kets de Vries from INSEAD asks the following exciting question&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/do-we-get-leaders-deserve-trump-coronavirus-manfred-kets-de-vries\/?trackingId=Mn2gbuJZTUuzmBsuPb7GOA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Are we stuck with the leaders we deserve?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the question implies that leaders be the result of what followers do or don&#8217;t do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It echoes what R. Spillane and J-E. Jouill\u00e9 (ref. Philosophy of Leadership: The Power of Authority) suggest when they write &#8220;<em>we cannot understand leadership as such unless we attend to the reasons that motivate followership<\/em>.&#8221; (2015)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The author of the article argues that the motivations behind the Trump election can be found in &#8220;<em>the darker feelings and frustrations within segments of the population [of the USA]<\/em>.&#8221; Eventually, those low-morale motives mobilize the corresponding behaviours in the so-called well-suited leader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, in the French newspaper Le Monde, the journalist Sylvie Kauffmann (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/idees\/article\/2020\/04\/20\/face-au-virus-un-monde-sans-leader_6037122_3232.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Face au coronavirus, un monde sans leader.&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;argued that from the COVID-19 crisis emerges a world without leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, such a view disregards how the darker feelings and frustrations of humankind can express themselves through the fabric of leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would claim those fears and frustrations (often directed towards others and the uncertainty about the future) are to some extent in any one of us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, history shows that when a significant number of group members calls for a leader based on those motives, the &#8220;fabric of leaders&#8221; will sooner or later mobilize a leader willing to address them at any cost &#8211; often in the course of the war.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, as the author of the article says,&nbsp;<em>people all over the world must themselves [not only] have the strength to ask, &#8220;What types of leaders do we require if we are to move forward?&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>but also what are their motives behind their choices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would those motives end up mobilize the virtuous qualities in their leaders or the bad ones?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The crisis and the rise of anxiety and suffering created will make those self-reflective stances of any followers not only more challenging but also more critical for our shared future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his recent contribution, the Professor Manfred Kets de Vries from INSEAD asks the following exciting question&nbsp;&#8220;Are we stuck with the leaders we deserve?&#8221; Interestingly, the question implies that leaders be the result of what followers do or don&#8217;t do.&nbsp; It echoes what R.
